What is search volume?

Search volume indicates how often a keyword is entered into a search engine per month on average. SEO tools and the Google Ads Keyword Planner provide the metric as an estimate for a country or region. Search volume helps you gauge demand for a topic and prioritize keywords for content planning: a search volume of 210 means Google processes the query about 210 times per month in the chosen market.

How is search volume measured?

No tool counts searches directly: every provider estimates search volume from its own data sources. Three sources are common:

  1. Google Ads data: The Keyword Planner reports values from the ad system, but rounds them into coarse buckets (such as “100 to 1K”) and groups spelling variants into one value.
  2. Clickstream data: Anonymized browser data from user panels is extrapolated to the whole market.
  3. Proprietary databases of SEO tools: Providers like SE Ranking, Ahrefs, or Semrush combine both sources and smooth the values with their own models.

Almost all tools show an average of the last 12 months. Seasonal terms like “advent calendar” look equally popular all year round, although demand sits almost entirely in November and December. For seasonal topics, the monthly trend is therefore more useful than the average value.

What does search volume tell you, and where are its limits?

Search volume measures demand, not visitors. If you plan with it, you need to know 4 limits:

  • Estimate instead of measurement: The numbers vary between tools and work best as a comparison between keywords.
  • The average hides seasonality and trends: A fast-growing term and a dying term can carry the same 12-month value.
  • Search volume does not equal clicks: How many visitors a page receives depends on position, presentation, and the features of the SERP; if Google answers the question directly in AI overviews or featured snippets, many searches end without a click.
  • The long tail is underreported: Very specific queries appear with a volume of 0, yet as long tail keywords they bring predictable traffic with clear purchase intent in total.

For prioritization, search volume alone is never enough; what counts is the combination of demand, search intent, and competition. Exactly this weighing is part of the craft of ongoing SEO services: it decides which keywords get content first.

What is keyword difficulty?

Keyword difficulty (KD) estimates on a scale from 0 to 100 how hard it is to reach the top 10 search results with a keyword. SEO tools calculate the value mainly from the authority and backlink profiles of the currently ranking pages: the stronger the competition, the higher the keyword difficulty.

The metric becomes useful only in combination with search volume. A keyword with high demand and low keyword difficulty is a quick win; a keyword with high demand and high keyword difficulty is a long-term goal that requires authority and patience. A high keyword difficulty is not a knockout criterion: it means more effort and a longer road, not unreachability.

Frequently asked questions about search volume

What is a good search volume?
There is no universal threshold. A keyword with 50 monthly searches can be more valuable than one with 5,000 if the search intent is close to a purchase and competition is low. What counts is the ratio of demand, competition, and relevance to your own offer.

Why do tools show different search volumes for the same keyword?
Every tool estimates from its own data: Google Ads data, clickstream panels, or proprietary databases. On top of that, many providers round in buckets and group spelling variants differently. The numbers therefore work as a comparison between keywords, not as an exact measurement.

Is a search volume of 0 a knockout criterion?
No. Tools capture very specific queries incompletely, and according to Google, around 15 percent of all daily searches are completely new. Many long tail keywords with a displayed volume of 0 bring relevant traffic in total, often with especially clear search intent.

What Are Sitelinks?

Sitelinks are additional links under a Google search result that lead directly to subpages of the same website. Google adds them automatically when a result is especially relevant, typically for searches for a brand name. A result with sitelinks takes up noticeably more space on the search results page, increases the click-through rate, and takes users straight to the right subpage. Sitelinks cannot be booked or submitted directly: Google selects them algorithmically from the structure of the website.

Google generates sitelinks fully automatically: The algorithm analyzes the structure of a website and shows as sitelinks the subpages it judges to be the most useful shortcuts for the specific search query. These are often pages like services, contact, careers, or a blog.

Sitelinks appear mainly for navigational search queries, meaning when someone searches specifically for a brand or website. For generic search terms, Google rarely shows them, because several providers compete for the positions there. Whether and which sitelinks appear can change at any time; there is no entitlement to them.

Google shows 3 types of sitelinks:

  1. Expanded sitelinks: Up to 6 links with their own description under the first search result, mostly for brand searches. The most prominent form.
  2. One-line sitelinks: A compact row of links under a result, also possible at lower positions.
  3. Ad sitelinks: Manually maintained sitelink assets in Google Ads campaigns. They look similar but follow their own rules and are the only sitelink type you set directly.

The formerly widespread sitelinks search box, a search field directly inside the search result, was discontinued by Google in November 2024.

You influence sitelinks through the signals Google derives them from. 4 levers work in practice:

  1. Clear site structure: A flat, logical hierarchy with unambiguously named main pages makes the choice easy for the algorithm.
  2. Internal linking: Important pages are linked prominently and with meaningful anchor texts; how this works is explained in our article on the internal link.
  3. Descriptive titles: Short, unambiguous page titles and headings, because Google takes the sitelink labels from them.
  4. Clean navigation: Breadcrumb navigation and consistent menus confirm the hierarchy.

You cannot remove unwanted pages from the sitelinks at the push of a button; Google retired the former demotion tool in Search Console in 2016. What remains is the indirect route: link the page more weakly internally or take it out of the index with noindex. A structure that favors sitelinks does not happen by accident but through systematic work on architecture and linking, a core building block of ongoing SEO services.

Can I request sitelinks from Google?

No. Organic sitelinks are assigned automatically by the algorithm. Only in Google Ads campaigns do you create sitelinks yourself as assets.

Why does my website show no sitelinks?

Usually one of three signals is missing: The website does not clearly rank at position 1 for its brand, the structure is too flat or ambiguous, or the brand is searched for too rarely. As brand awareness grows, sitelinks often appear on their own.

Are sitelinks a ranking factor?

What is the visibility index?

The visibility index is a metric calculated by SEO tools that condenses a domain’s presence in Google search results into a single number. Sistrix made the metric popular; other tools maintain comparable metrics such as the OVI from XOVI. The index combines a domain’s rankings for a fixed keyword set with search volume and the expected click-through rate. It is a tool value, not an official Google number.

How is the visibility index calculated?

All providers follow the same principle in 4 steps:

  1. Step 1: Query a fixed keyword set. The tool checks the domain’s rankings for a defined keyword pool; at Sistrix, that is one million keywords per country index.
  2. Step 2: Record positions. For each keyword, the domain’s best position within the top 100 counts.
  3. Step 3: Weight the results. Each position is weighted by the keyword’s search volume and the expected click probability of that position; ranking first for a strong keyword counts many times more than position 40 for a niche term.
  4. Step 4: Add everything up. The weighted individual values add up to the domain’s index value, usually updated weekly or daily.

Many tools report the value separately for desktop and mobile, and additionally per directory or individual URL. That makes it possible to narrow down which part of a website is gaining or losing visibility.

What does the visibility index tell you, and what not?

The visibility index is good for 3 statements: It shows a domain’s trend over months and years, it makes competitors comparable (within the same tool), and it makes the impact of Google updates visible as swings in the curve.

There are 3 things it does not measure: It does not measure real traffic (that is what clicks and impressions in Search Console are for), it does not know your individual business keyword set, and long-tail terms with little search volume are largely missing from the keyword pool. A domain can do excellent business with strong niche rankings and still carry a low visibility index. In our ongoing SEO services, we therefore always evaluate visibility metrics together with actual rankings and Search Console data, never on their own.

Why does the visibility index drop even though rankings look stable?

A falling visibility index has 5 typical causes: A Google core update shifts many positions at once; the SERP layout changes and new elements such as AI Overviews push organic results further down; the tool adjusts its keyword set; seasonal search volume fluctuations change the weighting; or individual rankings with high search volume are lost while many small ones stay stable. What is a good visibility index value?
There is no absolute target value. The visibility index is a comparative number: It only becomes meaningful in the trend of your own domain and in direct comparison with competitors in the same industry.

Is the visibility index a Google ranking factor?
No. Google does not know the visibility index; it is an external calculation by tool providers. It describes rankings, it does not influence them.

Do visibility values differ between tools?
Yes, considerably. Each tool uses its own keyword set and its own formula; the Sistrix visibility index and the OVI from XOVI are therefore not directly comparable. Comparisons only work within the same tool.

What is semantic search?

Semantic search refers to search methods that interpret the meaning of a query instead of only matching its wording against documents. Google identifies entities, their relationships, and the search intent behind the query and delivers results that answer the question even if they use different words. Semantic search is the foundation of modern Google Search and of AI search.

How does semantic search work?

Semantic search translates language into meaning. Three building blocks work together:

  • Entities: Google captures uniquely identifiable things such as people, places, brands, and concepts as entities and stores their relationships in the Knowledge Graph.
  • Search intent: The algorithm assigns a goal to every query, such as informing, comparing, or buying. Results that miss the search intent do not rank, no matter how often the keyword appears.
  • Language models and vectors: Words and texts are represented as numeric vectors; similar meaning means proximity in vector space. That is how Google recognizes that “car” and “automobile” mean the same thing.

Google built this capability in stages: the Knowledge Graph (2012) brought entity knowledge, the Hummingbird update (2013) put the meaning of the whole query at the center, RankBrain (2015) added machine learning for unseen queries, and BERT (2019) brought the understanding of how individual words work in context.

For a keyword, this means: it remains the entry point of your research, but it no longer wins through repetition. It wins through content that fully answers the question behind it.

No. Google does not use Latent Semantic Indexing. LSI is an analysis technique from the 1980s built for small, static document collections; Google spokespeople have clarified repeatedly that it plays no role in Google Search. The popular term LSI keyword is a marketing word, not a Google mechanism.

Only this much is right about the core of the idea: thematically related terms belong in a good text because they make the topic complete. They work through the meaning analysis of semantic search, not through an LSI formula.

What does semantic search mean for SEO?

Semantic search shifts optimization from the word to the topic. Four consequences for practice:

  1. Search intent before keyword: The content serves the goal behind the query, not the string.

Schema.org is the language a website uses to tell search engines what a piece of content means. Without that markup, Google sees only text and cannot tell whether 129 EUR is a price, a phone number or a house number. With the right schema type, plain text turns into an unambiguous statement that Google and AI systems can process directly.

How do Schema.org, structured data and JSON-LD fit together?

Schema.org, structured data and JSON-LD are three layers of the same job: the concept, the vocabulary and the format. The terms are often mixed up, but they mean different things.

  • Structured data is the concept: the idea of storing page content in a machine-readable, standardized scheme.
  • Schema.org is the vocabulary: the concrete set of types and properties the major search engines have agreed on.
  • JSON-LD is the format: the notation in which the Schema.org vocabulary is written down and placed inside the page.

The @context points to Schema.org and loads the vocabulary. @type selects the type Product, and the properties name, brand and offers fill it with values. Besides JSON-LD there are the older formats Microdata and RDFa, which weave the markup straight into the HTML. Google recommends JSON-LD today, because it sits separately from the visible content in the <head> or <body> and is easier to maintain.

Which schema types matter for SEO?

Schema.org holds more than 800 types, but only a dozen or so produce visible results in Google. These types matter most for SEO:

  • Organization / LocalBusiness: company data, logo, address and opening hours. The basis for the knowledge graph entry and for local results.
  • Product / Offer: price, availability and reviews. Triggers price and star displays in shopping and search results.
  • Article / BlogPosting: headline, author and date. Marks up editorial content and supports authorship.
  • FAQPage: Question and answer pairs. Google stopped showing them as a rich result on May 7, 2026, but the markup still helps AI systems and topic assignment.
  • BreadcrumbList: the navigation path display that replaces the URL path in the result listing.

Every type sits at a fixed place in the Schema.org hierarchy. BlogPosting is a subtype of Article, and Article in turn is a subtype of CreativeWork. A type inherits all properties of its parent class, which is why the more specific type is almost always the better choice.

How do you implement Schema.org?

Schema.org is added in 4 steps. The sequence is the same for every type and takes a few minutes for a single page.

  1. Pick the type: determine the Schema.org type that fits the page content, for example Product for a product page or FAQPage for a block of questions.
  2. Write the JSON-LD: fill the required and recommended properties with real values from the page. Google documents per type which fields are required.
  3. Embed it: put the JSON-LD block into the source code as <script type="application/ld+json">, in WordPress usually through an SEO plugin such as Yoast or through a code snippet of your own.
  4. Test it: check the markup with the Google Rich Results Test and the Schema.org validator, and monitor errors in Google Search Console.

What does Schema.org deliver? Rich snippets and AI visibility

Schema.org delivers two concrete benefits: more visible search results and better citability in AI systems. Both follow from machines understanding the page content without ambiguity.

  • Rich snippets: Google enriches the search listing with extra information such as star ratings, prices, breadcrumb paths or recipe images. These rich snippets make the listing bigger and lift the click rate without changing the position itself.
  • AI visibility (GEO): AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews rely on facts that are clearly marked up. Schema.org anchors a page as a clearly named entity with defined properties and raises the chance of being quoted, which is the goal of generative engine optimization.

One thing to keep straight: Schema.org is not a direct ranking factor. The markup does not improve the position, it improves the presentation and the machine readability. That markup work is a core building block of professional SEO services and the foundation for solid visibility in Google and in AI answers.

What is search intent?

Search intent is the goal a person pursues with a search query. Search intent describes why somebody types a particular keyword into Google and what kind of answer they expect. There are four main types of search intent: informational, navigational, transactional and commercial. Match the search intent behind a keyword and you deliver exactly what the searcher was after, which Google rewards with better positions.

Search intent is the foundation of modern SEO. Google no longer wants to find the keyword on a page, it wants to serve the need behind it. Hence the principle: intent before keyword. A page can carry a keyword a hundred times and still fail to rank if it misses what the searcher wanted.

Which four types of search intent are there?

There are four types of search intent: informational, navigational, transactional and commercial. Each one stands for a different goal on the searcher’s side and calls for a different kind of content.

  • Informational (looking for knowledge): the person wants information or an answer. Typical queries: “what is search intent”, “how does seo work”, “clean running shoes”. Matching content: guides, tutorials, definitions and glossary articles.
  • Navigational (heading for one page): the person wants to reach a specific website or brand. Typical queries: “taismo seo magazine”, “paypal login”, “instagram”. Matching content: the brand, home or login page itself.
  • Commercial (researching before a purchase): the person compares before deciding. Typical queries: “best running shoes review”, “seo agency comparison”, “iphone vs samsung”. Matching content: comparisons, reviews, best-of lists and first-hand reports.
  • Transactional (taking action): the person wants to complete an action, usually a purchase or a booking. Typical queries: “buy running shoes”, “book seo services”, “reserve hotel munich”. Matching content: product, service and checkout pages.

Commercial intent is also called commercial investigation and sits between pure information gathering and the final purchase. That phase often decides who the person ends up buying from.

How do you identify search intent (SERP analysis)?

The most reliable way to identify search intent is to look at the current search results page (SERP analysis). Over billions of clicks Google has already learned which intent dominates for a given keyword, and it shows exactly the result types that serve that intent. The current SERP is therefore the most honest source on search intent you have.

Three signals give the search intent away:

  1. The result types: if shops rank at the top, the query is transactional. If guides and Wikipedia rank, it is informational. If comparison articles and “best of” lists rank, it is commercial.
  2. The SERP features: shopping ads and product cards point to transactional intent, a knowledge panel or featured snippet to informational intent, a local map pack to local intent.
  3. The signal words inside the keyword: words such as “buy” or “price” signal transactional intent, “what”, “how” or “guide” signal informational intent, “best”, “review” or “comparison” signal commercial intent.

With a longtail keyword the intent is usually clearer than with a short, generic keyword. “shoes” is ambiguous, “waterproof trail running shoes men buy” is unmistakably transactional.
