What is Google Discover?

Google Discover is a personalized content feed from Google that shows users articles, videos, and web pages, mainly on smartphones, without them entering a search query. The selection follows interests Google derives from the user’s web and app activity. Discover appears in the Google app and on the home screen of the mobile Chrome browser, among other places.

How does Google Discover work?

Discover reverses the logic of search: The user does not ask a question; Google suggests content. The basis is the interest profile built from Google activity, such as visited pages, search history, and followed topics. The feed shows cards with a large image, a title, and the source; a tap opens the publisher’s website. Users actively shape the feed: they can follow topics or hide individual sources. Discover does not favor pure recency either; older content appears as well when it matches an interest.

How does content get into Google Discover?

Google names exactly two requirements: the content must be indexed by Google and must comply with the Discover content policies. No sign-up, special markup, or news status is required. There is no guarantee either: even compliant, indexed content only appears when it matches the interest profile of enough users. Discover is therefore not a classic ranking with positions 1 to 10, but a feed assembled individually for each user.

How do you optimize content for Google Discover?

Google’s documentation gives 5 concrete recommendations:

  • Large images: Featured images at least 1,200 pixels wide, ideally in 16:9 format.
  • Allow image previews: Enable the max-image-preview:large setting so Google may use the large image format in the feed. Common SEO plugins set it by default.
  • Honest titles: Page titles and headlines that carry the content; Google explicitly rates clickbait and sensationalist phrasing as negative.
  • Timely, unique content: Posts with their own angle and maintained recency (content freshness) fit the feed’s character.
  • Trust signals: Clear author, date, and source information, as described by the E-E-A-T concept, plus a fast, mobile-friendly page (PageSpeed).

How reliable is Discover traffic?

Discover traffic fluctuates heavily and cannot be planned. Google itself calls the visits “less predictable” than search traffic and recommends treating them as a supplement. A post can bring five-figure visitor numbers for a week and then disappear from the feed entirely; causes are shifting user interests and adjustments to Google’s systems. Discover traffic is measured in the dedicated “Discover” performance report in Google Search Console. Strategically this means: Discover is a bonus on top of a stable foundation of organic rankings, the kind a continuous SEO service builds.
