To get cited by AI, write content a machine can lift and verify: A clear claim in the first sentence, a number or named source behind it, and a visible author who stands for it. ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, and Perplexity name only a handful of sources per answer, and they pick the passages that already read like answers. This playbook shows the five text patterns AI systems quote, the page structure that carries them, and what running more than 90 definition pages of our own has taught us.

An AI citation is the new ranking

An AI citation is a mention or source link your website earns inside a generated answer, whether that answer appears in ChatGPT, in Google’s AI Overviews, or in Perplexity. Classic SEO competes for ten positions on a results page. A generated answer names roughly 2 to 7 sources, and every other page stays invisible. Getting cited by AI therefore replaces “rank higher” with a harder, almost binary goal: Be one of the few sources the machine trusts enough to quote.

Search data shows how fast this discipline is growing. The query “ai citations” grew from 30 to 590 monthly US searches between August 2025 and July 2026, and “generative engine optimization” grew from 40 to 4,400 in the same window (SE Ranking, July 2026). The discipline behind both terms, Generative Engine Optimization, treats the citation the way SEO treats the ranking: As the unit of visibility. This playbook covers the part of GEO you control most directly, the writing itself. It shows which sentences AI systems quote, which page structures carry those sentences, and how you retrofit both onto pages you already have.

How AI systems pick the sources they cite

Every generated answer runs through three stages, and each stage can drop you. First the system retrieves candidate content, either from a search index or through its own crawler. Then it evaluates the candidates: Does this passage answer the question directly, does it hold up against other sources, does the site look trustworthy? Finally it writes one answer and cites the few sources that carried it. The mechanism behind the first and last stage is called retrieval-augmented generation: The model fetches current sources and composes its answer from them instead of relying on training memory alone.

Google is explicit that the entry ticket is ordinary search optimization. Its documentation on AI features states that no additional markup and no special optimization are required beyond standard search best practices (Google Search Central, 2026). The real competition starts after retrieval: Dozens of retrieved pages hold the same information, and the system quotes the one that states it most clearly. That is why this playbook is about how you write, not about which system you write for.

The five text patterns AI systems quote

AI systems quote sentences and short passages, not whole pages. Across our own citation checks, the quoted passages keep following five patterns, and they match what semantic SEO has taught for years.

  1. The definition pattern. “[Term] is [definition].” Example: “An AI citation is a source mention inside a generated answer.” The sentence stands alone, so a machine can lift it without any surrounding context.
  2. The comparison pattern. “[A] vs. [B]: [The measurable difference].” Example: “AI Overview vs. featured snippet: An AI Overview merges several sources into one text, a featured snippet quotes exactly one page.”
  3. The list pattern. “[Topic] has [number] [elements]: X, Y, Z.” Example: “Three signals make a passage citable: Clarity, verifiable evidence, and a named author.”
  4. The step pattern. “Step 1: Do X. Step 2: Do Y.” Numbered instructions with one action per step, which generated how-to answers reproduce almost verbatim.
  5. The quantification pattern. “[Subject] [verb] [number] [unit].” Example: “Searches for ai citations grew from 30 to 590 per month within twelve months.” A number turns a claim into evidence.

These patterns are not folklore. The first controlled study on generative engine visibility tested nine optimization methods across a benchmark of 10,000 queries and found that adding quotations, statistics, and source citations lifted a page’s visibility in generated answers by up to 40 percent on the study’s visibility metric, while keyword stuffing brought no gain (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024). The three winning methods are the evidence patterns above; the losing method is the one habit left over from old SEO.

The reverse list matters just as much. AI systems skip opinions without evidence, vague plurals like “many companies struggle with this”, rhetorical questions, and transition sentences that only announce content. A sentence that carries no checkable information will never be quoted, no matter how well it reads.

The anatomy of a citable definition

The definition pattern deserves its own dissection, because it is the most quoted of the five. A citable definition packs three parts into one sentence: The term, its class, and its differentiator. “A canonical tag [term] is an HTML element [class] that tells search engines which version of a duplicated page counts [differentiator].” Keep that sentence at 25 words or fewer and a machine can lift it whole.

Position beats length. In July 2026 we audited the opening paragraphs of 85 of our own definition pages: 9 opened with context or contrast instead of a definition, and 14 buried the definition behind an insert, the “A keyword, also known as a search term or query, is …” construction that pushes the actual claim past word eight. The median first sentence ran 22 words and 85 percent stayed under 30, so length was never the problem; order was. The fix is mechanical: Move every insert behind the definition. “A keyword is the word or phrase a person types into a search engine. It is also called a search term.” Claim first, synonym second.

The same anatomy works far beyond glossaries. Open a service page with one sentence that says what the service is and for whom, open a case study with the measurable result, open a product page with what the product replaces. Wherever a page has a core claim, the first sentence is the citation you are offering.

Answer first: Build passages a machine can lift

Patterns need a structure that carries them. The single most effective change is answer-first order: The first paragraph under every heading answers that section’s question, the explanation follows. AI systems weight the beginning of a passage heavily, exactly as featured snippets always have. An answer buried in paragraph four exists for a human reader who scrolls, but not for a machine that extracts.

The second change is self-containment. A quoted passage travels without your page around it, so every section must survive on its own. Replace “as mentioned above” with the concrete term, resolve “it” and “this process” to their subjects, and write headings that state the answer instead of echoing the question. A heading like “Costs” forces the machine to guess; “What an SEO audit costs” tells it exactly what the passage proves.

A before-and-after shows the difference. Weak opener: “In this section we take a closer look at how structured data and AI visibility relate to each other.” Citable opener: “Structured data raises the chance of a correct AI citation because it labels your definition, your author, and your organization in machine-readable form.” Both sentences introduce the same section, but only the second can appear inside an answer.

Two formatting rules finish the job. From three parallel items onward, use a list, and put the most important item first, because generated answers reproduce list order. For comparable data, use a table: Rows and columns are the most machine-readable prose there is.

Pro tip: The context-free test

Paste a single paragraph into an empty AI chat and ask which question it answers. If the model cannot tell without seeing the rest of your page, the passage is not self-contained, and no citation engine will lift it either.

Evidence makes a claim citable

A claim becomes citable the moment a stranger could check it. That takes three ingredients: A concrete number, a named source, and a date. “Our clients rank better” is marketing; “the query ai citations grew from 30 to 590 monthly searches within a year, per SE Ranking data from July 2026” is evidence. Write “as of July 2026” instead of “currently”, and name the study instead of writing “studies show”.

Generated answers are assembled from several sources at once, so systems favor claims that other trustworthy pages corroborate. If you contradict the consensus, you need stronger evidence, not louder wording. The strongest evidence of all is data nobody else has: Your own measurements, your own cases, your own numbers. First-hand material is also exactly what Google’s guidance on helpful content asks for, with questions like whether first-hand expertise is visible and whether the information is demonstrably accurate (Google Search Central, 2026).

Show an author, show a date, be one entity

Machines cite sources they can identify. That starts with a visible author: A real name, one line of relevant experience, and a photo beat an anonymous company byline every time. Google groups these trust signals under E-E-A-T: Experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. For AI citations, the same signals decide whether your page counts as a source or as noise.

Behind the visible byline sits the entity: The machine-readable identity that ties your pages, your profiles, and your mentions together. The more consistent your name, your services, and your author appear across the web, the easier a system can conclude that you are one identifiable, quotable source. Depth pays into the same account: A site that covers one field completely gets cited for that field far more reliably than a site with one thin page per topic.

Citations also decay. A visible “last updated” date plus real maintenance signals that a page is alive, and content freshness is one of the few signals you fully control. Systems answering current questions prefer sources that carry current dates and current numbers.

Structured data: The amplifier, not the trick

Structured data tells machines explicitly what your visible text contains: A definition, a question with its answer, an author, an organization. JSON-LD markup removes the guesswork between your sentence and its citation, and Google’s documentation walks through the whole vocabulary (Google Search Central, 2026). One rule is non-negotiable: The markup must mirror what is visible on the page. Markup that claims content the page does not show violates Google’s guidelines and builds no trust with any system.

Keep the order straight: First the clear, honest text, then the markup. Structured data does not rescue a weak page, it amplifies a strong one. Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity: Same craft, three retrieval paths

The three big answer systems differ in where they fetch sources, not in what they quote. Perplexity is the most source-forward of the three: It links evidence for nearly every sentence, so precise, liftable claims pay off there immediately.

The conclusion is a relief for anyone planning content: The retrieval paths differ, the craft does not. A definition that opens the paragraph, a number with a named source, and a visible author work in all three systems. Write for the principle and you never have to rewrite for an interface.

Make an existing page citable in five steps

You rarely need new content to get cited by AI. You need to rearrange and harden what your pages already say. This is the retrofit we run on client pages, in order of impact:

  1. Step 1: Front-load the answer. State the core answer of the page in the first two sentences under the main heading, in one of the five patterns above.
  2. Step 2: Turn headings into statements. Every section heading names the answer it contains, not the question it repeats.
  3. Step 3: Attach evidence. Give every key claim one verifiable number or one named, dated source. Delete claims that cannot carry either.
  4. Step 4: Add the sender. A visible author with one line of experience, plus an honest “last updated” date.
  5. Step 5: Mirror it in markup. Add the structured data that matches the content type: Definition, FAQ, article with author and organization.

Half a day per page is a realistic budget, and the first three steps deliver most of the effect. Roll the routine out across your most important pages before you write anything new: An existing page with rankings, links, and history gets retrieved far more often than a fresh URL.

The transferable lesson: You do not need a big content team, you need one repeatable pattern applied to every question your customers actually ask. Three mistakes that keep you out of AI answers

Three mistakes undo otherwise strong pages. The buried answer: The page knows the answer but hides it behind an anecdote and two paragraphs of warm-up, so the machine quotes a competitor who states it in line one. Length without substance: More words without more evidence do not raise visibility; the KDD study measured no gain from keyword-heavy padding. The anonymous page: No author, no date, no identifiable organization. A system that cannot tell who is speaking will not present you as a source, because its own credibility depends on yours.

Check whether AI cites you

The direct test costs nothing: Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google the questions you want to be cited for, and note who gets named. If you appear, your pattern works; if a competitor appears, you have a concrete template to beat instead of a guess.
