What is a goto link?
A goto link is a redirect address that Google uses to link the results on its search results pages. The link first points to google.com/goto with an encrypted token, and only Google’s server then forwards the click to the website. Nothing changes for visitors, but for SEO tools that read search results automatically, the destination address can no longer be identified without additional requests.

How does a goto link work?
A goto link places Google’s own server between the search result and the website. The click goes to Google first and is forwarded from there. The process has 3 steps:
- Results page output: Google links the result to an address of the form
google.com/goto?url=with a token. Neither the domain nor the path is readable in the token, and each link is bound to the results page on which Google served it. - Click: The browser calls the goto address. Google’s server responds with a 301 redirect to www.google.com/goto and then with a 302 redirect to the website.
- Arrival: The visitor lands on the destination page as usual. If they hover over a result first, the browser’s status bar shows the goto address and no longer the destination address.
The destination address cannot be calculated from the token. According to Derek Perkins, founder of the rank tracker Nozzle, a tool has to follow every redirect individually, and Google does not answer HEAD requests, which would only fetch the headers. For fully resolving a ranking check across five results pages, Perkins cites 500 to 1,000 requests. What the two HTTP status codes 301 and 302 mean is explained separately in the SEO glossary.
Since when has Google used goto links?
Google has linked search results through goto links since summer 2026 and confirmed the rollout on August 26, 2026. The development unfolded in 5 stages:
- June 23, 2026: Alex Greenland publicly documents result links rewritten to google.com/goto for the first time.
- July 2, 2026: Brodie Clark describes the same pattern on organic and paid results.
- August 26, 2026: Google confirms the rollout to the industry outlet Search Engine Roundtable. In the days that follow, several SEO tool providers report that they resolve the addresses.
- October 22, 2026: Individual unresolved goto links reappear in queries made through an API for search results, 0.16 percent of results through October 28.
- October 30, 2026: Google limits resolution per results page. On the same day, 58.7 percent of the measured organic results come back without a destination address.
Why does Google use goto links?
Officially, Google justifies goto links only in general terms as protection against abuse. On August 26, 2026, a spokesperson told Search Engine Roundtable: “We have a long history of deploying technical measures against evolving forms of abuse, and we regularly take steps to protect our services and users.” Google does not say whom the measure is meant to hit.
In the industry, the automated reading of search results, known as scraping, is seen as the target. Rank trackers and SEO tools depend on it, and so do providers of AI search systems that use Google’s results as a source. In his newsletter of August 31, 2026, Sistrix founder Johannes Beus sees competitors such as ChatGPT as the main target and SEO tools as collateral damage. That is his assessment. Google has neither confirmed nor commented on it.
What changed on October 30, 2026?
Since October 30, 2026, Google limits how many goto links on a results page can be resolved within a short time. According to the data provider DataForSEO, as reported by SEO Südwest on October 31, the following applies to a results page with 18 links:
- The first 5 to 6 links redirect immediately.
- The 7th link waits 1 second, the 8th link 3 seconds.
- The 15th link waits up to 40 seconds, individual links up to 120 seconds.
- Once the limit is reached, Google shows an interstitial page with a “Continue” button that only responds after a waiting period.
The limit is tied to the results page, not to the IP address or the search query. According to DataForSEO, switching IP addresses or waiting longer does not help. This explanation comes from the provider and has not been verified externally.
Hasan Kalkan of EverGrow SEO Solution in Aachen, Germany, measured the consequences. Across 508 results pages from October 30, 2026, 2,552 of 4,344 organic results came back as goto links, which is 58.7 percent, and 59.5 percent in Germany. The first result was affected too, on 290 of the 508 pages. For queries with purchase intent the share was 72.0 percent, for purely informational queries 48.5 percent. On the following day, none of 5 compared data providers delivered all destination addresses, and the share without a real address ranged from 54.8 to 84.7 percent.
What do goto links mean for ranking data?
Goto links do not change rankings, they change how rankings are measured. Position, title, and description of a result remain in the data. Only the website’s address is missing. Tools that match a result to your website by its domain can then no longer find it. This leads to 3 typical false readings:
- Keyword not found: A keyword that sits on the first page of the SERP suddenly shows up in the rank tracker as outside the top 100.
- Position too low: The tool assigns a lower, randomly resolved result to the website and reports a worse ranking.
- Falling metrics: A visibility index and every SEO KPI based on rankings drop, although the search results have not changed.
In taismo’s client reports the break was clearly visible. Of the page 1 keywords across 14 clients, the rank tracker was missing 1 to 4 percent per day through October 29, 20 percent on October 30, and 11 to 14 percent in the days after. Of 9 keywords containing a brand name, none was missing before, and 3 were missing on October 30. Search Console showed no break for the same days. How to tell a real ranking loss from noise in general is covered in the article on SERP volatility.
Are Search Console and AI answers affected?
Google Search Console is not affected by goto links, because it counts impressions and clicks directly at Google. That makes it the cross-check for any unusual ranking movement since October 30. For queries that are mostly run by tools, however, it can also count those requests as impressions. Clicks and mobile impressions are therefore the most reliable figures.
The sources of AI Overviews were not affected in the October 30 measurement. None of the 4,471 source links contained a goto link. Anyone who measures their visibility in AI answers also counts mentions in the answer text, and those remain readable. For measuring visibility in answer engines, AEO (also called GEO), goto links therefore change little as things stand.
How do you detect goto links in your data?
5 checks show whether goto links distort your ranking data. The first two concern the raw data, the last three the report.
- Search the raw data: Search exports from rank trackers and APIs from October 22, 2026 onward for the patterns
google.com/goto,/goto?url=, and country domains such asgoogle.de/goto. - Read the domain from the breadcrumb: For 94.9 percent of the affected results, the website’s domain still appeared at the start of the breadcrumb in the October 30 measurement. That still allows you to match the result.
- Check against Search Console: If a page 1 keyword or a brand drops out of the rank tracker, compare the same query for the same page, the same country, and the same device in Search Console. If it shows no drop, it is a measurement error.
- Ask your provider: Ask your rank tracker whether and since when it resolves goto links. Switching providers does not solve the problem, because in the October 31 comparison no provider delivered all addresses.
- Flag the period in your report: Mark ranking trends from October 22, and especially from October 30, 2026, as disrupted before anyone derives a loss from them.
Individual addresses can be translated back with a free converter from DataForSEO. For all links on one results page, the provider estimates 40 to 60 seconds. The rule we use to separate measurement errors from real losses is part of the reporting in taismo’s SEO services.
What is the difference between goto links and manipulated results pages?
With goto links, only the destination address is missing from the data. With manipulated results pages, the results themselves are swapped. Both disruptions hit tools that query Google automatically, and both fall into the fall of 2026.
| Attribute | Goto links | Manipulated results pages |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Summer 2026, limit since October 30, 2026 | first cases on September 20, 2026 |
| What changes | The address of the result is missing. | Different results appear in a different order. |
| Typical symptom | Keyword not found, even in position 1 | Jumps lasting one or more days, more often on page 2 than on page 1 |
| Documented by | EverGrow, DataForSEO, SEO Südwest | Nozzle, confirmed by Ahrefs and Semrush |
| Cross-check | Search Console, domain in the breadcrumb | Search Console, several measurement days |
Neither has anything to do with the removal of the num=100 parameter in September 2025, which only limited the number of results per request. A SERP analysis stays reliable despite such disruptions if it draws on several measurement days and a second source.
Frequently asked questions about goto links
Do goto links hurt my Google ranking?
Goto links do not change rankings. They only affect how tools read the address of a result. Position, title, and description stay the same.
Do I need to change anything on my website?
There is nothing to change on the website. Reports and tools need to adapt. Ranking losses from October 30, 2026 onward should first be checked against Search Console before any action follows.
Do visitors notice goto links?
Visitors only see the goto address in the status bar when they hover over a result. The click leads to the website as usual, because the limit only applies when many links on the same results page are requested in quick succession.
