B2C SEO optimizes for one person who decides in minutes, so it competes on transactional queries, product pages, local results and reviews. B2B SEO optimizes for a buying group of six to ten people who decide over months, so it competes on problem-stage research, comparison content and proof. Both run in the same Google index and use the same ranking system. What changes is who you write for, which queries you chase, and how you count success. This article walks through the seven differences that actually change day-to-day work, with search volume, difficulty and cost-per-click data from July 2026.

B2C SEO vs. B2B SEO at a glance

The two models differ in seven places. Everything else, from crawling to Core Web Vitals, works identically, because Google runs one index for both.

Difference B2C SEO B2B SEO
1. Who decides One person, occasionally a couple A buying group of six to ten people
2. Time to decide Minutes to a few days Three to twelve months
3. Dominant search intent Transactional and local Informational and commercial investigation
4. Winning formats Product pages, category pages, review content Original data, implementation guides, comparison pages, case studies
5. Conversion event Purchase in the cart Demo, quote request, download
6. Technical focus Product markup, faceted navigation, speed at scale Entity clarity, E-E-A-T signals, deep internal linking
7. Success metric Revenue per session Qualified pipeline per keyword cluster

Read the table as trade-offs, not as a wall. A manufacturer selling spare parts online runs B2C mechanics on its shop and B2B mechanics on its solution pages, on one domain.

B2C SEO: One person decides, fast

B2C SEO is search optimization for businesses that sell to end consumers. The defining constraint is the decision unit: One person searches, compares and buys, often inside the same session and often on a phone. That compresses the entire funnel into a handful of page views.

Three consequences follow. Demand concentrates on transactional queries with modifiers such as “buy”, “best”, “cheap” and “near me”. Volume per category is large enough that positions translate into revenue almost linearly. And the competitive field includes marketplaces and price aggregators, so you are rarely fighting other manufacturers alone.

B2C SEO is carried by product and category pages, not by blog posts. A category page ranking for a head term earns more than twenty guides, because it sits where the purchase happens. Blog content works as a feeder and as a source of internal links, and should be judged that way.

Knowing your target audience in B2C means knowing shopping moments: The gift bought two days before a birthday, the spare part bought the evening a machine breaks. Each moment carries its own query pattern.

B2B SEO: Six to ten people decide, slowly

B2B SEO is search optimization for businesses that sell to other businesses. The defining constraint is again the decision unit, and it is radically different. Gartner research on the B2B buying journey finds that the typical buying group for a complex B2B solution involves six to ten decision makers, each of whom independently gathers four or five pieces of information and brings them back to the group.

The second Gartner number matters more for search: B2B customers spend only 17 percent of the total buying time meeting potential suppliers. For the remaining 83 percent, your website is the sales rep. That is the strongest argument for B2B SEO there is, and it has nothing to do with rankings.

Because those people research separately, a B2B site has to answer six to ten different questions about one product. The technical lead wants integration details, finance wants total cost over three years, compliance wants certifications. Serving one persona and ignoring the rest produces traffic that stalls in the sales funnel instead of reaching a quote.

The other constant in B2B is proof. Claims that a consumer accepts at face value get checked by a procurement department. Named authors, real reference customers and verifiable numbers are the E-E-A-T substance that buyers and search systems both use to judge credibility.

Keyword research splits the two models

Keyword research is where the two models diverge most, because they use opposite selection criteria.

B2C selects by volume multiplied by conversion probability. Head terms are worth the fight, because one category term can outperform a whole content cluster. In B2B, volume is a weak and often misleading signal. A term searched 30 times a month by the right plant manager beats one searched 3,000 times by students writing a thesis.

The two keywords in this article’s own title show the pattern. In the US database, “b2c seo” runs at 210 searches a month, difficulty 6, cost per click $0.00. “B2b seo” runs at 260 searches, difficulty 23, cost per click $22.79. Almost the same volume, almost four times the difficulty, and a click advertisers value at over twenty dollars. The B2B term is not more popular. It is more expensive because the buyer behind it is worth more.

Fig. 2: B2C demand concentrates in transactional and local queries, B2B demand concentrates in problem-stage and comparison queries. Data source: SE Ranking, US database, retrieved 26 July 2026.

Four selection rules follow from this:

  • B2C: Start with category and product head terms, then add modifiers. Check the SERP for marketplaces first, because a page one full of aggregators changes the effort estimate.
  • B2B: Start with problem statements in the customer’s words, not your product name. “Conveyor belt slipping under load” finds buyers earlier than “conveyor systems”.
  • B2B: Treat long tail keywords as the main entry point, because head terms rarely carry buying intent in specialized markets.
  • Both: Cluster terms around one focus keyword plus secondary keywords, so one strong page serves a query family instead of five thin pages competing with each other.
💡 Pro tip: Sort your keyword list by cost per click before you sort it by volume

Cost per click is the cleanest public proxy for commercial value. Advertisers bid $22.79 on “b2b seo” because the customer behind it is worth several thousand. A term with 70 searches a month at $27.51, like “b2c seo services”, deserves more attention than one with 4,400 searches at $0.20. Volume tells you how many people search. Cost per click tells you how many of them buy.

Content formats that earn the click

Format follows intent. Google’s guidance on helpful content asks for pages written for people and showing first-hand expertise, in both models. What differs is the format carrying it.

Four B2C formats reliably earn clicks and revenue:

  • Category pages with real editorial text around the product grid, covering selection criteria and common questions.
  • Product pages with unique descriptions. Manufacturer text copied across 40 shops produces duplicate content and hands the ranking to the stronger domain.
  • Buying guides that end on a category page, not on a newsletter form.
  • Review content on the product page, which feeds the buyer and the structured data at once.

Four B2B formats reliably produce pipeline:

  • Original data. One benchmark from your own installed base outperforms ten summaries of other people’s studies, and it is the most reliable way to earn links in a dry industry.
  • Implementation guides for the practitioner who operates the product, not for the person who signs.
  • Comparison pages that name real alternatives, including the cases where you lose. Procurement runs that comparison anyway. Writing it yourself means you frame it.
  • A pricing page, even with ranges. “Request a quote” as the only pricing signal removes you from every shortlist built around a budget ceiling.

In both models the money page is the destination. A landing page without an internal link from the content that ranks is a page nobody reaches, and content marketing without that link produces traffic reports instead of revenue.

Technical priorities and structured data

The technical checklist is shared. Crawlability, indexation, page speed and mobile rendering apply to every site. The priorities inside it shift with site size.

B2C sites are wide. A mid-sized shop carries 5,000 to 500,000 URLs, so the risks are structural: Faceted navigation generating endless parameter URLs, out-of-stock products left indexable, and crawl budget spent on filter combinations nobody searches for. Product markup is the highest-leverage addition, because Google uses Product, Offer and Review data to build merchant listings that show price, availability and rating directly in the result.

B2B sites are deep. A manufacturer often has fewer than 300 URLs and none of those crawl budget problems. The work shifts to clarity: Organization and Person markup that names the company and its experts, internal links that connect a problem article to the solution page, and a structure a search system can read as a topic map. Structured data in B2B rarely produces a rich result. It produces a correctly understood entity, which is what feeds knowledge panels and AI answers.

Local search and reviews carry B2C

Local search is the largest structural advantage B2C has, and most B2B companies can ignore it. Google Business Profile documentation names three ranking factors: Relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence includes review count and review score, which makes reviews a direct ranking input rather than a soft trust signal.

For a retailer, a restaurant or a practice, the local pack often beats the classic organic result in commercial value, and the work sits in the profile rather than on the website. Categories, opening hours, photos and a steady flow of Google reviews move positions faster than another blog post. Consumer businesses with physical locations should treat local SEO as their first channel, not as an add-on.

Social platforms follow the same asymmetry. “B2c social media marketing” reaches 260 searches a month at difficulty 9, and content that performs there also performs in image and video search. In B2B, the same effort is better spent on industry publications and reference projects, which produce the mentions search systems read as authority.

How to measure each model

Using one reporting template for both models is the most common measurement mistake we find in audits. The time between click and revenue differs by a factor of fifty.

B2C measures revenue per session and per category. The attribution window is short, so a monthly view is meaningful. Track conversions per landing page group, average order value per source, and the share of category revenue coming from organic search. When a category loses positions, the revenue drop shows up within two weeks.

B2B measures pipeline per keyword cluster. Lead counts are the wrong unit, because a large share are students, competitors and job applicants. Tag each request with its entry page and entry query, then follow it through the CRM to closed revenue. With a sales cycle of three to twelve months, the honest rhythm is quarterly cohorts. Judging a B2B SEO program after eight weeks measures the reporting tool, nothing else.

Google documents that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that conventional SEO practice remains the way in. Good news for both models, and this is where they part ways again.

B2C content enters AI answers through facts a machine can lift: Price, availability, shipping time, rating, size, material. Those facts live in product markup and in the merchant feed, so AI visibility in B2C is largely a data quality project. B2B content enters through statements a machine can quote: A definition in one sentence, a benchmark with a unit, a comparison naming real alternatives, a verifiable author.

Fig. 3: AI answers pull different building blocks from B2C and B2B pages. The optimization work differs, the underlying requirement does not: Machine-readable facts win citations.

Both paths lead to the same discipline. Generative engine optimization means writing so a system can extract a correct, attributable statement without reading around it. Answer the question in the first sentence of the section, quantify wherever a number exists, and mark up the entity behind the claim. That is how a page earns a place in AI Overviews, and it works the same way for a garden furniture shop and for a hydraulics manufacturer.

When you sell to both audiences

Most companies are not purely one or the other, and the useful decision is made per query, not per company. A tool manufacturer serves trade buyers and hobbyists from one catalog. Forcing one model onto both audiences loses whichever one you did not pick.

A split architecture on a shared technical base solves it in four steps:

  1. Split the query set first. Assign every cluster to consumer or business intent before you touch a page. Terms carrying both go to the more valuable conversion.
  2. Give each intent its own entry page. A shop area for transactional queries, a solution area for problem-stage queries. Shared products, separate paths.
  3. Keep one technical layer. Splitting domains splits authority and buys nothing.
  4. Report separately. Revenue per session on the consumer side, pipeline per cluster on the business side, never averaged into one number.

That is why we do not describe taismo as a B2B agency or a consumer agency. As a German SEO and GEO agency from Munich, we work with mid-sized manufacturers, e-commerce brands, practices and local providers, and the model follows the demand in front of us. taismo took fifth place in the German SEO Contest 2026 and ranks second among Munich online marketing agencies according to Agenturtipp, in both cases through the same work: Reading the demand correctly and building the page that satisfies it. Our SEO services cover strategy, content, technical work, structured data and AI visibility in one program.

Frequently asked questions

What is B2C SEO?

B2C SEO is search optimization for businesses that sell to end consumers. It targets one decider who buys within minutes to days, so it concentrates on transactional and local queries, product and category pages, review content and product structured data. Success is measured as revenue per session.

What is B2B SEO?

B2B SEO is search optimization for businesses that sell to other businesses. It targets a buying group of six to ten people who decide over three to twelve months, so it concentrates on problem-stage research, comparison content, original data and proof. Success is measured as qualified pipeline per keyword cluster, not as lead count.

What is B2B vs B2C?

B2B means business to business, where a company sells to another company. B2C means business to consumer, where a company sells to a private individual. In search, the practical difference is the decision unit: One person with a short decision path in B2C, six to ten people with a long decision path in B2B.

Why is SEO important for B2B?

Gartner research finds that B2B buyers spend only 17 percent of their buying time meeting potential suppliers. For the rest of the journey, your website answers the questions instead of a sales rep. B2B SEO puts your content into that self-directed research phase, which is where the shortlist is built.

How do you build a B2B SEO campaign?

Start with the buying group, not the keyword list. Write down the six to ten roles involved, collect the questions each one asks, map those questions to queries, then build one strong page per question cluster with internal links into the solution page. Report quarterly on pipeline, not monthly on rankings.
