Generative engine optimization (GEO) costs a manageable add-on to a regular SEO retainer, not a fantasy premium. At taismo, that add-on is around 10 percent of the previous SEO price: A retainer of 2,000 euros per month becomes about 200 euros more expensive, it does not double. The reason is simple: GEO is part of modern SEO, not a separate product. This guide walks through the three pricing models, the four factors that drive the effort, and the red flags that tell you an offer wants to sell you the same work twice.

👉 Want to see first what GEO work actually includes? Our GEO services page lays it out.

The short answer: Around 10 percent on top of SEO

A market price for generative engine optimization does not exist yet. The discipline is young and demand is climbing fast: In the United States, monthly searches for “generative engine optimization” grew from 40 to 3,600 within one year, and searches for “geo agency” grew from 70 to 590 over the same period (measured with SE Ranking, US database, August 2026). Established pricing benchmarks like the ones that exist for SEO or Google Ads have not formed in a market this new. That makes the pricing logic behind an offer more important than any package price on a website.

Our answer is transparent: GEO costs around a 10 percent add-on to the existing SEO retainer at taismo, as a fixed part of the ongoing engagement. Applied to the retainer benchmarks from our guide SEO pricing in 2026, where survey data puts the most common SEO retainer at 501 to 1,000 US dollars per month and the average at 2,917 US dollars, the GEO share lands at roughly 50 to 300 US dollars per month for most engagements. taismo calculates in euros, and our reference values follow the same logic:

  • Small companies and local providers: SEO retainer of 500 to 1,500 euros per month, containing a GEO share of about 50 to 150 euros.
  • Midsize companies with several topics: SEO retainer of 1,500 to 3,500 euros per month, containing a GEO share of about 150 to 350 euros.
  • Highly contested markets and e-commerce: SEO retainer from 3,500 euros per month upward, with the GEO share growing proportionally.

Important context: These are taismo reference values and a model calculation, not quotes. The real price follows your starting point and the actual workload. The next sections show how that calculation comes together.

Why GEO is not a separate product

GEO (generative engine optimization) covers every measure that helps AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews find, understand, and cite your content. That sounds like a new discipline with its own price tag. Technically, it is not: Google states in its Search Central documentation that the AI features of Google Search have no additional requirements beyond established SEO best practices.

The foundation is identical for both disciplines: A crawlable website, a clear page structure, content with direct and verifiable statements, and clean structured data. GEO adds three things on top of that foundation: Consistent entities, core statements prepared for citation, and monitoring of your AI visibility. Why we consistently treat GEO as part of SEO is laid out in our article GEO vs. SEO.

For the price, one simple test follows: An agency that sells you GEO as a fully standalone product next to SEO is selling you the foundation twice. A serious offer prices the real extra work, exactly what our own GEO service consists of: Work on JSON-LD and entities, declarative preparation of key content, and ongoing visibility checks across AI systems.

Retainer, project, or consulting: The three pricing models

GEO is offered in the same three models as SEO. They differ in duration, responsibility, and pricing logic:

Fig. 1: The three pricing models for GEO compared. The retainer is the standard model because AI visibility needs ongoing care.

Monthly retainer: The standard model

The retainer is our core business and the logical model for GEO. AI answers change constantly, entities and content need upkeep, and your visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews needs regular measurement. An SEO retainer with a GEO share covers both in one contract, cancelable monthly at taismo. The pricing logic: SEO retainer plus around 10 percent.

One-time project: The foundations

A GEO project builds the foundations once: A schema framework with clean JSON-LD, clarified entities, an llms.txt, and key pages rebuilt for citability. As an entry point, that makes sense. For scale: One-time foundation projects at taismo sit in the same range as SEO starter projects, roughly 1,000 to 5,000 euros depending on scope (a reference value, not a quote). Said honestly: Without ongoing care this foundation ages, because AI systems and your content keep evolving.

Pure consulting: Knowledge for your team

Companies with their own marketing or SEO team book GEO knowledge at an hourly rate or as a workshop. For orientation: Hourly rates in SEO cluster at 75 to 100 US dollars in the Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO professionals, and GEO consulting sits in the same range in our experience, because the same specialists do the work. In this model, execution and therefore results remain entirely with your team.

Model Best for Pricing logic
Retainer Companies that want to stay visible permanently SEO retainer plus around 10% GEO share
Project Getting started when the foundations are missing One-time, taismo reference 1,000 to 5,000 €
Consulting Teams with their own execution capacity Hourly rate, surveys cluster at $75 to $100

What drives the GEO effort

The GEO effort depends on four factors: Your SEO starting point, the state of your structured data, your content needs, and the technical accessibility of your site for AI crawlers. A website that scores well on all four factors pays little extra. A website starting from zero needs foundation work first.

Four effort factors determine what GEO costsWhat drives the GEO effort1. SEO starting pointDo you already rank? Then the foundation stands.2. Entity and schema statusIs there JSON-LD? Are your entities consistent?3. Content baseDirect statements or marketing prose?4. Crawler accessMay AI crawlers read your pages?GEO share in the retaineraround 10% on top, depending on your startFig. 2 · taismo
Fig. 2: Four effort factors feed into the GEO share. The better your starting point, the smaller the add-on.

Factor 1, your SEO starting point: AI systems prefer to cite pages that have already built authority on their topic. A website with a maintained structure and topical authority brings most of the GEO foundation with it. A website that is organically invisible needs classic SEO work first.

Factor 2, your entity and schema status: AI systems understand companies through entities: Who are you, what do you offer, and how do people, services, and locations connect? If structured JSON-LD is missing entirely, or if your website and your public profiles contradict each other, this is where the largest one-time effort sits.

Factor 3, your content base: AI systems cite direct, verifiable statements. Price ranges, definitions, numbers with a source. If your most important pages carry only promotional paragraphs without concrete statements, those pages need rebuilding or expansion. Which patterns make a statement citable is exactly what our guide on how to get cited by AI covers. This factor has the widest spread in effort.

Factor 4, technical accessibility: AI crawlers must be allowed to read your content. OpenAI, for example, documents GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot as separate crawlers with separate permissions; a site that blocks them wholesale stays invisible in ChatGPT search, no matter how good the content is. Add smaller items like an llms.txt and clean rendering without JavaScript hurdles.

💡
Pro tip: You can check factor 2 yourself, no agency needed. Open the source code of your homepage (Ctrl+U) and search for “application/ld+json”. If there is no match, your website has no structured data foundation, and you know before the first sales call that foundation work is coming.

What the GEO share actually covers

An add-on is only fair if it is clear what happens for the money. The GEO share of an ongoing engagement at taismo covers six recurring tasks:

  1. JSON-LD upkeep: Every new page and every new article receives structured data that references the central entity graph of the website. Existing blocks are updated when content changes.
  2. Entity consistency: Name, services, locations, and people must be described identically on the website, in directories, and in public profiles. Contradictions confuse AI systems just as much as they confuse Google.
  3. Citable preparation: New content is written so AI systems can lift it: Direct definitions, concrete numbers with a source, clear statements in the first paragraph.
  4. llms.txt and crawler permissions: The briefing document for AI crawlers is kept current, and the permissions in robots.txt are checked so no relevant crawler is locked out by accident.
  5. AI visibility monitoring: A fixed list of relevant prompts is measured regularly against the major AI systems. That shows whether and where your brand is mentioned, instead of relying on anecdotes.
  6. Adjusting: The monitoring produces concrete changes: Sharpen a definition, fix an entity, add a page. This loop is the reason GEO belongs in the retainer and not in a one-time project.

These six points double as your checklist for other offers: If they are missing from the scope description, you are paying for a label.

Three sample calculations, honestly done

The following three scenarios are model calculations based on our own reference values, stated in euros because taismo quotes in euros (the US dollar equivalents sit in the same order of magnitude). They show the pricing logic; they are not quotes.

Scenario 1, the local practice: A physical therapy practice with a solid website pays 800 euros per month for its SEO engagement. The GEO share is around 10 percent, so about 80 euros per month. That funds a clean LocalBusiness schema, consistent data across the website and the Google Business Profile, and direct answer paragraphs on the service pages. A local provider needs nothing more to start.

Scenario 2, the midsize B2B supplier: A machine parts supplier invests 2,200 euros per month in SEO. The GEO share of about 220 euros per month funds the entity graph across all services, a maintained llms.txt, citable preparation of the technical content, and regular AI visibility monitoring. This pays off especially in B2B, because buyers increasingly put complex questions to an AI first.

Scenario 3, the fresh start without an SEO base: A company with no previous SEO work wants “GEO only”. That does not work seriously, because GEO builds on the SEO foundation. The honest path: First a one-time foundation project (audit, structure, schema framework; taismo reference 1,000 to 5,000 euros), then an ongoing engagement in which SEO and GEO grow together. An agency that sells you a pure GEO package in this situation is building the facade before the house.

What would GEO cost for your website?

Instead of a range, you get a concrete assessment from us: We check your starting point, your schema status, and your content base, and derive an honest retainer from that. SEO and GEO in one contract, cancelable monthly.

Five red flags in cheap and fantasy offers

A young market without pricing standards attracts offers that promise more than they deliver. You can spot these five red flags without any technical knowledge:

  1. Guaranteed placements in AI answers. Nobody controls what ChatGPT or Perplexity output. The answers change with phrasing, session, and model version. A “number one spot in ChatGPT, guaranteed” is not a quality signal; it is a reason to walk away.
  2. A GEO package without looking at your website. Serious providers assess the starting point first, then name a price. A fixed price without an analysis is a guess.
  3. A one-time fee for “registering you with AI systems”. There is no directory to buy into. AI systems cite sources they consider credible while crawling; that status is earned, not purchased.
  4. Fantasy metrics without a measurement method. If a report claims “AI visibility: 87 percent”, ask how it was measured: Which prompts, which systems, which time period? Without a traceable method, the number is decoration.
  5. No concrete deliverables. An honest offer names what gets done: Schema work, entity upkeep, content rebuilds, monitoring. “We optimize you for AI” without a task list is a warning sign.

The simplest counter-check remains the pricing logic: Ask the provider to explain how the price follows from the workload. An honest calculation takes two minutes to explain.

For the sales call itself, five questions separate serious providers from the rest:

  • How do you assess my starting point before you name a price?
  • Which of the GEO tasks are already part of my existing SEO engagement, and which are new?
  • How do you measure AI visibility, with which prompts and which systems?
  • What happens to the foundations if I end the contract?
  • Why does your GEO offer cost exactly what it costs?

The last question is the most important one. It separates calculated workload from a made-up wish price.

When GEO pays off

GEO pays off whenever your customers look for answers instead of websites. Three groups benefit most:

Local providers benefit because AI answers to questions like “Who does X in Munich?” name only a handful of companies. Whoever appears there shares attention with a few names instead of ten blue links. B2B companies with complex offerings benefit because technical questions increasingly go to AI systems first, and the cited sources are perceived as authorities. Early movers benefit because the competition for AI visibility is only beginning: Demand for generative engine optimization is growing measurably, and most websites are not prepared for it yet.

On timing, the same rule applies as in SEO: GEO is build-up work over months, not a switch. How to prepare your content for AI systems in practice is covered in our guide to ChatGPT SEO.

Let us talk numbers, honestly

You will not get fantasy metrics or guarantee promises from us. You get a clear assessment of your starting point and a price that reflects the real workload. The first conversation costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions about GEO cost

How much does generative engine optimization cost per month?

As part of an ongoing SEO engagement, GEO typically costs around a 10 percent add-on to the SEO retainer. At taismo reference retainers between 500 and 3,500 euros per month, that is roughly 50 to 350 euros extra.

Can you do GEO without SEO?

Not seriously. GEO builds on the same foundations as SEO: A crawlable website, clear structure, citable content, and structured data. Google explicitly names no additional requirements for its AI features beyond established SEO best practices.

Is GEO worth it for small businesses?

Yes, especially locally. AI answers name only a few providers per question, and the effort stays small once the SEO base stands: On a local retainer, the GEO share often amounts to a two-digit euro figure per month.

How fast does GEO show results?

GEO works in months, not days. AI systems pick up structured data and consistent entities at different speeds, so a serious estimate is a range of about two to six months, similar to SEO.

Why do agencies charge such different prices for GEO?

The market is young and pricing standards are missing. That is why the range runs from small add-ons on existing SEO contracts to standalone packages. Compare offers by their concrete deliverables and their explained pricing logic, not by the name of the product.
