What is SERP?
The abbreviation SERP stands for "Search Engine Result Page." In German, it could be called"Ergebnisseite einer Suchmaschine"(search engine results page). When a user enters a search term in the search bar of a search engine such as Google or Bing, they are then redirected to theresults page. There, the search engine displays a list of websites that are most relevant to this search term according tothesearch engine'salgorithm.
How do search engines work?
In order to display the SERP in a few seconds, search enginesdo notperform searchesin real time. Search engines constantly crawl the internet andthe websites found there. The search engine then creates an index of websites and associated topics orkeywords. When a search query is entered, the search engine displays thewebsites that havealreadybeen indexedin advance.
In the best case scenario, the SERP contains thewebsites that were most relevantto the search terma few hours ago.
What does SERP consist of?
Basically, the SERP contains alist of linksand some additional information about the page. These short sections are calledsnippets.
In the simplest version, snippets consist ofa titleanddescription(meta title and description). It is therefore important to include a meta title and description in the source code of every subpage of a website so that the website is displayedoptimallyon the SERP. Tips for writing meta titles and meta descriptions can be found in ourglossary.
If no description is provided, search engines display anexcerptfrom the text of the page. This may be truncated or misrepresent the content of the page. The user will most likely scroll on tothe next result.
With the help of various methods, additional information can already be displayed at this point in the web search. Enriching the snippets with additional information turns them into so-called"rich snippets."
