What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are additions at the end of a URL that let web analytics tools recognize which source, which medium, and which campaign brought a visitor to a website. The five standard parameters are utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content. The abbreviation UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module, named after the analytics software Urchin, which Google acquired in 2005.

Term profile
| Attribute | Details |
|---|---|
| Abbreviation | UTM, Urchin Tracking Module |
| Type | Query parameters in the URL, meaning key-value pairs after the question mark |
| Standard parameters | utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content |
| Required for clean reporting | utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign |
| Read by | virtually all web analytics tools, including Plausible, Matomo, and Google Analytics |
| Upper and lower case | case-sensitive; “Newsletter” and “newsletter” show up as two sources |
| Related identifier | gclid, the click ID of Google Ads auto-tagging |
Which UTM parameters are there?
There are 5 standard UTM parameters, three of which should be set for every campaign.
| Parameter | Describes | Example value | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| utm_source | the source the visitor comes from | newsletter, linkedin, google | always |
| utm_medium | the type of channel | email, social, cpc | always |
| utm_campaign | the campaign or promotion | 2026-10_seo-check | always |
| utm_term | the keyword of a paid ad | seo-services | for search ads |
| utm_content | the variant of the ad or the position of the link | button-top, text-link | for tests and multiple links |
Google Analytics 4 also evaluates the parameters utm_id, utm_source_platform, utm_creative_format, and utm_marketing_tactic. Other tools mostly ignore them, so the five standard parameters carry the actual reporting.
How is a URL with UTM parameters structured?
A URL with UTM parameters consists of the normal address, a question mark, and several key-value pairs separated by an ampersand. A link from a newsletter to a service page looks like this:
https://beispiel.de/leistungen/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2026-10_herbstaktion&utm_content=button-oben
If the URL already contains a question mark, for example because of a filter in an online store, the UTM parameters attach with &. Spaces and special characters do not belong in the values. Hyphens or underscores keep the values readable and avoid encoded characters like %20.
What do you use UTM parameters for?
UTM parameters mark links whose origin web analytics would otherwise recognize incorrectly or not at all. 5 uses are typical:
- Newsletters: Many email programs send no referrer. Without UTM parameters, clicks from the newsletter end up in the “Direct” bucket.
- Social networks: Apps often open links in their own browser and obscure the source. UTM parameters also separate paid posts from organic ones.
- Paid ads: Paid and organic clicks both come from google.com. A UTM suffix in the campaign URL options of Google Ads separates them reliably, even in tools that cannot assign the gclid click ID to individual campaigns.
- Offline advertising: QR codes on flyers, trade show walls, or business cards lead to a tagged URL. That makes printed advertising measurable.
- Partnerships: Guest articles, partner sites, and influencer marketing each get their own value in utm_source or utm_campaign.
For search ads, taismo therefore recommends a fixed UTM suffix per campaign. That way, paid Google visits appear in web analytics separately from organic search, and the conversions of both channels can be compared cleanly. How search ads are set up for this is described on the page about Google Ads management.
What rules apply to naming UTM parameters?
UTM parameters need a fixed naming convention, because every deviation shows up as a separate source in reporting. 5 rules keep the data clean:
- Lowercase: All values are lowercase. “LinkedIn”, “linkedin”, and “Linkedin” would otherwise be three sources.
- Fixed list of values: For utm_source and utm_medium there is a short, binding list, such as email, social, cpc, and referral as mediums.
- Descriptive campaign names: Date and topic in the campaign name, such as
2026-10_seo-check, keep campaigns identifiable even months later. - Central documentation: A spreadsheet records every combination in use. Anyone building a new link takes the values from there.
- No personal data: Names, email addresses, or customer numbers never belong in a UTM value, because the URL ends up in log files, browser histories, and analytics data.
Do UTM parameters hurt SEO?
UTM parameters do not hurt search engine optimization as long as the tagged URLs point to the clean address via canonical and internal links work without UTM parameters. Technically, every parameter variant is a separate URL with identical content. So that Google does not index variants, a self-referencing canonical link always names the address without parameters. That way, no duplicate content is created.
Two mistakes are common in practice:
- UTM parameters in internal links: An internal link with UTM parameters overwrites the original source of the visit. A visitor from Google Search who clicks a tagged teaser then counts as a campaign visit. On top of that, the website then links to parameter URLs on a large scale.
- Blocking in robots.txt: Blocking parameter URLs via robots.txt prevents Google from reading the canonical link on those pages. The cleaner solution is the canonical alone.
How do UTM parameters reveal visitors from AI systems?
ChatGPT appends the parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com to many links in its answers, which is why visitors from ChatGPT appear as a separate source in web analytics. Other AI assistants pass on their origin only partially as a referrer or not at all. Part of the visits from AI answers therefore ends up in the “Direct” bucket.
For measuring AI visibility, this means: The number of visitors from AI systems is a lower bound. Whether a brand is mentioned in AI answers is not measured by web analytics at all, because a mention without a click leaves no trace on the website. That takes a separate measurement with fixed questions to the models, as described in the article on measuring AI visibility. Together, both show the effect of the work on visibility in AI answers through answer engine optimization (AEO), also called GEO.
Where does UTM data appear in web analytics?
UTM data appears in every web analytics tool in the reports on sources and campaigns. In Plausible, the analytics tool taismo uses for all clients, it appears in the sources report, broken down by source, medium, and campaign. In Google Analytics it sits in the acquisition section. Only the connection with goals shows which campaign brings inquiries.
Frequently asked questions about UTM parameters
Are UTM parameters GDPR-compliant?
UTM parameters describe channels and campaigns and contain no personal data, as long as nobody writes names, email addresses, or customer numbers into them. The usual data protection rules apply to the web analytics itself.
What is the difference between utm_source and utm_medium?
utm_source names the specific source, such as linkedin or newsletter. utm_medium names the type of channel, such as social or email.
Do I need UTM parameters for Google Ads?
Google Ads tags clicks with auto-tagging via the gclid. UTM parameters are worth adding if another analytics tool is supposed to report campaigns separately.
Can I change UTM parameters afterward?
No. Visits that have already been recorded keep the values they arrived with. New values only apply to clicks from the change onward.
