What is a URL?

A URL, short for Uniform Resource Locator, is the address of a web page. It carries three pieces of information at once: the identification of the resource, the access method and the location of the page in question.

URL explained: a Uniform Resource Locator is the address that identifies where a web page lives

How a URL is built

The URL https://taismo.de/en/what-is/ tells you that

  • the subpage “what-is”
  • sits at the web location “taismo.de”
  • and is reached over the access protocol “https”.

The way URLs are built also contributes a great deal to navigation and orientation on a website. Look at all the solutions or products sitting below a given level, for example:

https://taismo.de/en/what-is/longtail-keyword/
and
https://taismo.de/en/what-is/dns/

That makes it clear where visitors are on your site and what kind of information they can expect in this area.

Take care when changing URLs

Moving your URLs to new addresses can be as much work, and as costly, as changing your phone number. Some visitors may have saved the URL as a bookmark, others have shared a link that no longer works. In the best case valuable backlinks point at your address, and you do not want to lose those either. So weigh it up carefully before you change your URLs.
