An unmarked paid link counts as link spam and is one of the methods of <a href=\"https:\/\/taismo.de\/en\/what-is\/black-hat-seo\/\">black hat SEO<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Affiliate links:<\/strong> Commission links count as paid placements and carry <code>sponsored<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Comments and forums:<\/strong> Links that visitors set themselves carry <code>ugc<\/code>. This removes the incentive for spammers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unverified sources:<\/strong> A link to a page whose quality you cannot assess carries <code>nofollow<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/taismo.de\/en\/what-is\/internal-link\/\">internal link<\/a>, on the other hand, stays without an attribute. Nofollow on internal links interrupts the flow of link equity within your own website, and Google treats it as only a hint there as well. If you want to manage your <a href=\"https:\/\/taismo.de\/en\/what-is\/crawl-budget\/\">crawl budget<\/a>, use other tools: For areas Google should not crawl, Google recommends the <a href=\"https:\/\/taismo.de\/en\/what-is\/robots-txt\/\">robots.txt<\/a>, and for pages that should stay out of the index, the <a href=\"https:\/\/taismo.de\/en\/what-is\/noindex-attribute\/\">noindex attribute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-check\">How do you check whether a link is nofollow?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Whether a link is nofollow is shown in the source code of the linking page, in the link&#8217;s <code>rel<\/code> attribute.<\/strong> The check works in 3 steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Read the attribute:<\/strong> Right-click in the browser, choose &#8220;Inspect&#8221;, and check whether the <code>rel<\/code> attribute of the <code>a<\/code> element contains nofollow, sponsored, or ugc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check page-wide settings:<\/strong> Search the source code for <code>meta name=\"robots\"<\/code> and the HTTP response headers for the X-Robots-Tag. A page-wide nofollow overrides every individual link.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Look at the actual listing page:<\/strong> A portal&#8217;s documentation often describes a different state than the page it actually serves. The only reliable check is to fetch the specific page your link is on.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>How important the third step is, taismo measured in September 2026 across several directories and platforms.
