Technical health, visibility, and engagement are leading indicators that explain why a result moves. AI visibility shows impact even where no click happens.<\/p>\n<p>For a company with a service that needs explaining, 3 SEO KPIs form a reliable core:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Organic leads:<\/strong> Contact requests, booked meetings, or quote requests whose session started in organic search.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clicks on pages with buying intent:<\/strong> Organic clicks on service and product pages, kept separate from guides and articles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-brand visibility:<\/strong> Rankings and clicks for searches that do not contain the company name. Anyone who already searches for the brand knows the company.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Splitting by brand is the most important filter of all. A rise in clicks can come entirely from a trade show, a press article, or an ad campaign that makes more people search for the company name. For search engine optimization, the growth that counts is in searches where the company used to be invisible.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"misreadings\">Why are rankings and impressions alone misleading?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Rankings and impressions measure visibility, and visibility only turns into visitors when searchers actually click the result.<\/strong> Three misreadings come up regularly when we evaluate client projects:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Good position, no clicks:<\/strong> In a B2B project in September 2026, 15 queries ranked in position 10 or better and earned not a single click from 1,521 impressions. The causes were AI Overviews above the results and snippets that were too long. A position therefore always belongs next to the click-through rate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AI blocks counted as rankings:<\/strong> Rank trackers list results inside <a href=\"https:\/\/taismo.de\/en\/what-is\/ai-overviews\/\">AI Overviews<\/a> or &#8220;People also ask&#8221; as separate rows, often with position 1. For one measured domain, 822 rows fell into positions 1 to 3, and only 44 of them were real organic results. The other 778 were placements inside AI Overviews, question boxes, and other elements of the results page.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A spike from a single page:<\/strong> A jump in impressions looks like growth and often comes from one page and one term. On taismo.de, almost half of all AI impressions between July and September 2026 came from a single glossary page and a short wave of demand. That is why every metric is broken down by page before it is judged.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/taismo.de\/en\/what-is\/ranking\/\">ranking<\/a> itself is not a fixed value either. It varies by location, device, and day. A rank tracker measures a sample, Search Console an average across all actual impressions. Both numbers differ, and both are correct.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ai-visibility\">How do you measure AI visibility as an SEO KPI?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>AI visibility is measured with two sources: <a href=\"https:\/\/taismo.de\/en\/seo-magazine\/search-console-ai-report\/\">the AI report in Google Search Console<\/a> for Google&#8217;s own AI answers, and a fixed list of questions for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.<\/strong> The two sources answer different questions and complement each other.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>AI report in Search Console:<\/strong> Since late August 2026, Google has counted separately under &#8220;Performance&#8221; how often a link to a page was shown in AI Overviews and in AI Mode. The report groups by page, country, device, and day and goes back three months. It does not show clicks or queries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fixed list of questions:<\/strong> For answers outside Google, an unchanging list of questions runs regularly against several AI systems. It counts how many answers name the company and what <a href=\"https:\/\/taismo.de\/en\/what-is\/share-of-voice\/\">share of voice<\/a> it reaches against competitors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The list of questions determines the result of this measurement. If you only ask questions your own name fits anyway, you measure a visibility that does not exist in the market. For searches that end without a click on any result, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/taismo.de\/en\/what-is\/zero-click-search\/\">zero-click searches<\/a>, AI visibility is often the only metric that shows any effect at all.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"setting-kpis\">How do you set SEO KPIs correctly?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>SEO KPIs are set in 5 steps, working backward from the business goal to the individual metric.<\/strong> This order keeps a report from measuring only what a tool happens to display.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Step 1, name the business goal:<\/strong> For example, 20 qualified leads per month for a specific service.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 2, derive the results KPI:<\/strong> Organic leads through the service page, measured in web analytics or the CRM.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 3, choose two to three leading indicators:<\/strong> Non-brand clicks, click-through rate, and positions of the service page in Search Console.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 4, measure the baseline:<\/strong> Record the level of the last three complete months before anything changes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Step 5, set the target and deadline:<\/strong> Define a target value for a period of six to twelve months and review it monthly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Two rules keep the evaluation clean. Compare complete months only; a month with 21 recorded days against one with 31 shows a decline that does not exist. And seasonal industries compare with the same month of the previous year. For paid campaigns, UTM parameters belong in the destination URLs so that web analytics tools can separate ad clicks from organic visits.
