The unit of work shrinks from the page to the single statement, and the deciding signals move from links and click behavior to semantic fit, factual precision, and clear entities. At taismo, generative engine optimization is part of modern SEO rather than a second product with a second invoice: Every AI answer is assembled from pages a crawler indexed first, so the SEO groundwork decides whether you are in the running at all.

👉 Want to be found in classic search and named in AI answers? See how we work on GEO

GEO stands for generative engine optimization, not for geotargeting

GEO means generative engine optimization: The work of getting your content and your brand into the answers that generative AI systems produce, from ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Perplexity to Microsoft Copilot and the AI Overviews above Google’s classic result list.

The term came out of research, not out of an agency pitch. Pranjal Aggarwal and five co-authors introduced it in the paper „GEO: Generative Engine Optimization“ at KDD 2024, along with GEO-bench, a benchmark of user queries across several domains. Their headline result: Rewriting a source with citations, expert quotations, and statistics raised its visibility in generated answers by up to 40 percent.

One warning about the acronym, because US search data files at least four different things under the same three letters. Two of them are marketing disciplines, one is a paid media setting, and one is plain business shorthand. Sorting them apart first saves you from buying the wrong thing. All search volumes and cost per click figures in this article come from the SE Ranking US database, checked in July 2026.

Generative engine optimization is the subject of this article: Getting cited inside AI generated answers. US demand for the spelled out term runs at 4,400 searches per month and stood at 40 in August 2025.

Geo marketing plans marketing by location: Catchment areas, store radius, regional campaigns. Around 210 searches per month, and a term that predates AI search by decades.

Geotargeting and geofencing restrict ad delivery to a defined area. That is a paid media setting rather than organic search. „Geo fencing marketing“ alone draws 240 searches per month at a cost per click of 10.30 dollars.

Geographic SEO is the older name for ranking in a city or a region, which everybody now calls local SEO.

The overlap is not harmless. Ask five vendors for a GEO audit and you can get five different scopes back, one of which turns out to be a city landing page project. So name the meaning in the brief and then check that the deliverables match it: A generative engine optimization scope talks about citations, entities, and answer surfaces, while a geo marketing scope talks about radius, catchment, and store locators. This article covers the first one only. For the second, the local SEO service page is the right place.

Both terms already have their own definitions in our glossary: Search engine optimization (SEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO). This article does what neither of them does: It compares the two.

GEO vs. SEO: Six differences that change your daily work

SEO optimizes whether a page is found in a result list. GEO optimizes whether a statement and the entity behind it make it into an AI answer. Both work on the same content and grade it differently.

Aspect

SEO

GEO

Goal

A ranked link somebody clicks

A mention or citation inside a generated answer

Unit of work

The page and its URL

The single statement and the entity behind it

Main signals

Relevance, links, authority, user behavior

Semantic fit, factual precision, entity clarity, corroboration across sources

Where you appear

Google and Bing result lists

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, AI Overviews

How you measure

Positions, clicks, sessions

Share of prompts that mention or cite you

Typical failure

The page is not indexed or not relevant enough

The fact is buried in marketing prose or contradicted elsewhere

Fig. 1: SEO and GEO judge the same content by different criteria. The purpose behind both stays identical: Being visible when somebody is looking for what you do.

The stakes behind that table are measurable. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 US adults across 68,879 Google searches in March 2025. On result pages carrying an AI summary, people clicked a classic result in 8 percent of visits, against 15 percent without a summary. Only 1 percent clicked a source inside the summary, and 26 percent ended their session right there, against 16 percent on pages without one.

Read those numbers as a shift in where the decision happens, not as the end of search. Your page still has to be indexed and good enough to get pulled in. It just gets fewer chances to earn the click, which makes being named in the answer the thing worth working for.

An example makes the difference concrete. Someone asks what an SEO retainer costs. Google returns ten pages and the person picks one. An assistant writes one answer and names one or two sources. A pricing page promising „individual packages tailored to your needs“ gives it nothing to quote. A page naming a range, its conditions, and the date it was last checked gives it a sentence it can lift as it stands.

How a generative engine picks the sources it cites

Two conditions decide whether your page can show up in Google’s AI features at all, and Google states them plainly: The page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet. Nothing else is required, and a handful of ordinary directives can quietly remove that eligibility, which is why it belongs at the top of the audit when a site is missing from AI answers.

What happens after that is where GEO earns its name. For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google describes a query fan-out technique: The system issues multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, then builds one response out of what comes back. Assistants that browse the live web work along the same lines. They split your question into narrower ones, fetch pages through a crawler, break them into passages, and rank the passages.

That last step is the one no ranking report shows you. The contest is no longer your page against a competitor page. It is your paragraph against their paragraph. A page can hold position three in the SERP and still lose the citation, because the paragraph answering the sub-question sits three scrolls down behind a sales pitch. The page that keeps winning these retrievals is what we call a grounding page: One URL, one entity, facts stated clearly enough to be quoted as they are.

How a generative engine selects the sources it cites
<desc id="pipe-d">Four steps: A page is crawled and indexed, the system fans the question out into several searches, it retrieves single passages instead of whole pages, and it cites the passage that answers the sub-question most clearly.</desc><rect width="760" height="250" fill="#ffffff"/><g font-family="Arial" font-size="14" text-anchor="middle"><rect x="20" y="70" width="165" height="112" rx="12" fill="#fdf5ec" stroke="#ED8924" stroke-width="2"/><text x="102" y="98" fill="#ED8924" font-size="12" font-weight="700">STEP 1</text><text x="102" y="128" fill="#072328" font-weight="700">Crawled and</text><text x="102" y="148" fill="#072328" font-weight="700">indexed</text><polygon points="198,120 206,126 198,132" fill="#ED8924"/><rect x="205" y="70" width="165" height="112" rx="12" fill="#fdf5ec" stroke="#ED8924" stroke-width="2"/><text x="287" y="98" fill="#ED8924" font-size="12" font-weight="700">STEP 2</text><text x="287" y="128" fill="#072328" font-weight="700">Query fanned out</text><text x="287" y="148" fill="#072328" font-weight="700">into sub-questions</text><polygon points="383,120 391,126 383,132" fill="#ED8924"/><rect x="390" y="70" width="165" height="112" rx="12" fill="#072328"/><text x="472" y="98" fill="#ffffff" font-size="12" font-weight="700">STEP 3</text><text x="472" y="128" fill="#ED8924" font-weight="700">Passages ranked,</text><text x="472" y="148" fill="#ED8924" font-weight="700">not pages</text><polygon points="568,120 576,126 568,132" fill="#ED8924"/><rect x="575" y="70" width="165" height="112" rx="12" fill="#fdf5ec" stroke="#ED8924" stroke-width="2"/><text x="657" y="98" fill="#ED8924" font-size="12" font-weight="700">STEP 4</text><text x="657" y="128" fill="#072328" font-weight="700">Passage quoted</text><text x="657" y="148" fill="#072328" font-weight="700">and cited</text></g><text x="752" y="242" text-anchor="end" font-family="Arial" font-size="11" fill="#072328" opacity="0.5">Fig. 2 · taismo</text>
Fig. 2: A generative engine ranks passages, not domains. Every step before that is classic SEO work.

Three settings can rule you out before content ever matters

Eligibility is a technical state rather than an editorial one, and three separate controls can switch it off. They live in three different places, which is why teams tend to find only one of them.

Crawl blocks. A disallow rule in your robots.txt stops the fetch, and so does a bot filter in a CDN or a hosting firewall. The second one never shows up in your repository, so it gets missed.

Preview controls.
noindex
,
nosnippet
,
max-snippet:0
, and a
data-nosnippet
wrapper each remove snippet eligibility, whether they arrive as a meta tag or as an X-Robots-Tag header. One line on a template can take a whole section of a site out of AI answers while its rankings look untouched, which is why the noindex attribute and its neighbors belong in every release checklist.

The generative AI opt out. Search Console carries a dedicated setting to exclude a site’s links and content from Search generative AI features. Google states that a site using it „won’t receive any traffic or impressions from these features“, and that the control „isn’t used as a ranking or inclusion signal affecting other parts of Search“. Changes take a few days to take effect.

That third control is worth knowing in both directions. It is the clean way out for a publisher who wants no part of AI answers, and it is the first thing to check when a site that ranks perfectly well is missing from them for no visible reason. It is also separate from
Google-Extended
, which governs model training rather than answer surfaces, so opting out of one says nothing about the other.

What Google says has not changed

The clearest argument against treating GEO as a separate discipline comes from Google itself, in the Search Central guide „AI features and your website“.

„There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.“

The same guide closes the door on the shortcut most GEO offers are built on: „You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There’s also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add.“ The recommended list that follows is ordinary SEO hygiene: Allow crawling in robots.txt and at the CDN, make content findable through internal links, keep important content in text form, and make sure structured data matches the visible text.

Two honest caveats belong next to that quote. First, Google speaks for Google. OpenAI, Perplexity, and Microsoft run their own crawlers and retrieval, and none of them publish an equivalent guide. Second, „not required“ is a long way from „pointless“. Structured data buys no ticket into an AI answer, and it still removes ambiguity about who wrote a page.

Google went considerably further in May 2026 with a dedicated guide to optimizing for generative AI features, published on 15 May and framed explicitly around mythbusting the AEO and GEO labels. One sentence in it settles the question this article asks.

„From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.“

Beyond restating the structured data point above in sharper words, the guide takes apart three further tactics that GEO packages are commonly built on. Files such as llms.txt „will neither harm nor help your site’s visibility or rankings in Google Search, as Google Search ignores them“. There is „no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI to better understand it“. And you „don’t need to write in a specific way just for generative AI search“, because the systems „can understand synonyms and general meanings“.

That last one deserves a pause, because it trims back a good deal of GEO advice, including the sharper versions of the declarative writing rule further down this page. Google’s point is that clarity is not a machine dialect. Answering first helps a reader in a hurry, and a model reading your page behaves a lot like a reader in a hurry. What does not work is a special register aimed at machines, a page keyword stuffed for an LLM, or content chopped into fragments on the theory that retrieval prefers crumbs.

A second event in May 2026 makes the same point from the opposite direction. Google retired the FAQ rich result: The feature stopped appearing in Google Search on 7 May 2026, and the documentation for it was removed the following month. If markup were the ticket into AI answers, the appearance feature built on the most answer shaped markup of all would be an odd thing to switch off first. Rich snippets and generative answers turn out to be two different games. There is a housekeeping job in that for most sites: FAQPage markup now produces nothing at all in Google Search, so treat it as dead weight in your templates, while leaving the visible question and answer blocks exactly where they are. Readers use them, and a plainly answered question is precisely the kind of passage a retrieval step lifts.

The GEO work you are probably already doing

Much of what sells as GEO today has been part of solid SEO for years. We keep Google Business Profiles and directory listings clean, we work on reviews and reputation, and we keep company data identical across every source that mentions the brand. That reads like local SEO housekeeping, and it is the foundation of AI visibility.

The reason sits in how the models decide whom to trust. A generative engine treats your company as an entity and gains confidence when the same facts turn up in the same form everywhere: Name, address, services, ratings, founding year. Consistent facts across independent sources are what a knowledge graph is built from, and corroboration is one of the few trust signals a model can compute cheaply.

A small real-world case shows how fast that breaks. A company opens a second location and adds the new address to the website only, not to the Google Business Profile and not to the directories. For classic SEO that is a minor inconsistency. For an AI answer it is a genuine problem: The model finds two conflicting addresses for one entity and, when in doubt, cites neither. In our work with more than 50 clients in competitive B2B and mid-market niches, that contradiction is the most common reason a brand goes missing from answers it should own.

💡

Pro tip: Before you buy any GEO tool, run one audit yourself. Search your company name plus your city in ChatGPT and Perplexity, then check every fact in the answer against your website, your Google Business Profile, and your top three directory listings. Every contradiction is a reason for a model to cite someone else.

Four levers that genuinely change when you optimize for AI answers

Four things move the needle for AI visibility: Declarative writing, consistent entities, structured data, and verifiable expertise. None is exotic, and each pays into classic rankings too.

The four practical levers of generative engine optimization
<desc id="lev-d">Declarative writing, consistent entities, structured data in JSON-LD, and verifiable E-E-A-T.</desc><rect width="760" height="250" fill="#ffffff"/><g font-family="Arial" font-size="14" text-anchor="middle"><rect x="20" y="60" width="165" height="130" rx="12" fill="#fdf5ec" stroke="#ED8924" stroke-width="2"/><text x="102" y="115" fill="#072328" font-weight="700">Declarative</text><text x="102" y="135" fill="#072328" font-weight="700">writing</text><rect x="205" y="60" width="165" height="130" rx="12" fill="#fdf5ec" stroke="#ED8924" stroke-width="2"/><text x="287" y="115" fill="#072328" font-weight="700">Consistent</text><text x="287" y="135" fill="#072328" font-weight="700">entities</text><rect x="390" y="60" width="165" height="130" rx="12" fill="#072328"/><text x="472" y="125" fill="#ED8924" font-weight="700">JSON-LD</text><rect x="575" y="60" width="165" height="130" rx="12" fill="#fdf5ec" stroke="#ED8924" stroke-width="2"/><text x="657" y="115" fill="#072328" font-weight="700">Verifiable</text><text x="657" y="135" fill="#072328" font-weight="700">E-E-A-T</text></g><text x="752" y="242" text-anchor="end" font-family="Arial" font-size="11" fill="#072328" opacity="0.5">Fig. 3 · taismo</text>
Fig. 3: The four levers we work on for AI visibility, all of which also improve classic search performance.

Write declaratively

Declarative writing means every paragraph answers one question completely and stands on its own. Instead of „in this article we look at the benefits of …“, the paragraph opens with the answer: „A grounding page is an authoritative fact source for AI systems.“ That gives a model a passage it can quote and a reader the answer without a warm-up. The GEO paper measured exactly this effect, with citations, quotations, and statistics lifting visibility by up to 40 percent. Note the boundary Google draws around it, quoted above: The gain comes from being specific and getting to the point, not from writing in a machine register.

Keep entities consistent

An entity is a thing a machine can identify: A brand, a person, a product, a place. GEO means naming those entities the same way everywhere and connecting them to trusted profiles through
sameAs
links. When „taismo GmbH“ appears in identical form on the website, in the Google profile, on LinkedIn, and in directories, a model resolves all of them to one company. Three spellings split that picture and weaken every mention.

Mark facts up with JSON-LD

Structured data makes facts machine readable. With JSON-LD you state explicitly who the author is, when a page was published, which organization stands behind it, and what a term means. We use
Organization
for companies,
BlogPosting
for articles, and
DefinedTerm
for glossary entries. Google asks one thing in return: Your markup has to match the text a visitor sees.

Make expertise verifiable

E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trust. For classic SEO it helps Google judge quality. For AI answers the same idea applies to citability: A model prefers sources whose claims can be checked, whose authors are named, and whose facts show up consistently elsewhere. Named authorship, concrete numbers, dated statements, and public proof all qualify. Our own proof is public as well, from fifth place in the German SEO Contest 2026 to second place among Munich online marketing agencies in the Agenturtipp ranking.

One retainer, both kinds of visibility

This is the work we run inside an ongoing SEO retainer: Crawlability, declarative content, structured data, and consistent entity signals, measured against Google results and AI answers alike. We run the same weekly rhythm we ran before AI answers existed, with three steps altered and one added. Here is the inventory, step by step through a normal content and technical cycle.

Step in the cycle

Touched by GEO?

What that means in practice

Topic and keyword research

Unchanged

Prompts carry no search volume, so demand data stays the starting point

Briefing and outline

Changed

Every section gets one question and one answer, so a passage can stand on its own

Writing

Changed

The conclusion moves into the first sentence, claims carry numbers and dates

Technical check before publishing

Changed

Snippet eligibility and the generative AI opt out join the checklist

Structured data

Unchanged

Same graph, same rule that markup matches the visible text

Internal linking

Unchanged

Discovery works the way it always did

Off site work

Wider in scope

Profile and directory data now act as fact sources, not only as citations

Reporting

Added

A prompt panel runs beside the ranking report

Fig. 4: Eight steps of an ordinary SEO cycle, and the four that GEO actually touches.

Four of eight move, and none of the four is a new craft. The briefing changes shape rather than substance: Instead of a heading list, we write the question each section has to answer outright, which happens to make the draft easier to review as well. The writing rule fits in one line, answer first and explain second. The technical check gains two items that did not exist two years ago. Reporting gains a panel, covered in the next section but one.

Watch the framing built into the phrase „from SEO to GEO“, which draws about 170 US searches a month on its own. It suggests a migration, as though you leave one place for another. There is nothing to migrate. The same crawl, the same index, and largely the same pages serve both surfaces, so a migration plan is the wrong shape of project entirely.

What you need instead is one pass over the pages carrying your most valuable facts, and that pass is small enough to schedule. In our retainers it looks like this: One workshop to name the twenty facts a buyer needs about the company, one audit of where those facts currently live and whether they contradict each other, then rewrites of the openings on the pages that hold them. Two to four weeks of work for a mid-sized site, once, followed by the ordinary content cycle. A vendor selling a permanent GEO program with no end state to the setup phase is selling a subscription rather than a project.

One thing does get genuinely harder, and it is worth naming rather than glossing over: Attribution. A buyer who reads about you in an AI answer, remembers the name, searches for it three days later and books a call arrives in your reports as branded organic traffic. The answer that started it leaves no trace in that session. The honest position is that GEO gets judged on leading indicators and brand demand rather than on a clean last click line, which also makes it the wrong place to promise a payback month.

SEO, AEO, GEO, and LLMO: Four labels, one body of work

Four acronyms compete for the same budget right now, and the search data shows the confusion is real: „answer engine optimization“ draws about 1,900 US searches per month, „llmo“ about 590, and „seo vs geo vs aeo“ another 320. Here is what each one claims.

SEO targets visibility in classic result lists at Google and Bing.

AEO, answer engine optimization, targets the direct answer: Featured snippets, voice results, and assistant replies.

GEO targets being cited inside a generated answer.

LLMO, large language model optimization, targets what a model says about you at all, including what it absorbed during training.

The four labels also have four different origins, which is why none of them maps cleanly onto the others. SEO is the oldest and describes a market. AEO grew out of the featured snippet and voice assistant years, when the prize was a single spoken answer. GEO comes from one research paper, the KDD 2024 work cited above, and was a measurement method before it was ever a service. LLMO has no defining document at all, which is exactly why its scope shifts from vendor to vendor.

Label

What it promises

Deliverable that differs from plain SEO

SEO

A ranked link in a result list

The baseline everything else is measured against

AEO

The direct answer: Snippet, voice reply, assistant reply

None. In the US data, „seo agency“ carries a cost per click of 10.00 dollars at a keyword difficulty of 69. „Generative engine optimization agency“ carries 16.86 dollars at a difficulty of 16. Advertisers pay roughly 70 percent more per click for a term a fraction as contested, which is what an emerging label looks like before a market works out that the deliverables overlap. „Geo agency“ tells the same story at 11.50 dollars and a difficulty of 21, and its volume went from 50 searches a month in August 2025 to 480 in July 2026.

Google took a public position on the acronyms in the May 2026 guide, and it is unusually blunt for search documentation. The guide is framed around mythbusting common AEO and GEO misconceptions, and the sentence quoted earlier settles the category question: Optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. None of that makes the labels useless. They are handy shorthand for naming which surface you mean in a meeting. It makes them useless as a reason for a second contract.

Compare the deliverables and the four collapse into one. Every label needs an indexable site, clear entities, factual content that can be quoted, and structured data matching the page. The differences sit in the reporting. Our advice when an agency quotes separate retainers for SEO and GEO: Ask which concrete deliverables differ. If the answer is a dashboard, you are paying twice for one job. The same test suits agentic SEO, the next label forming around AI agents that browse on their own.

How to measure GEO, in short

Measurement got its own instrument in June 2026. Google shipped the Search Generative AI performance report in Google Search Console, which shows how often links to your site were shown inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, separated out from the rest of your search data for the first time. Four limits define it: Impressions only, with no clicks, no click through rate and no position; those two surfaces, with Search Labs experiments excluded; the dimensions page, country, date and device; and a partial rollout, since Google states that not all properties have access yet.

If you have read older advice on this, including an earlier version of this article, take the correction: Search Console does now report generative AI impressions separately. What has not changed is that the same impressions still sit inside the Web search type of the ordinary Performance report, so the two figures are not additive.

The report covers Google and nothing else, which is why it sits beside a prompt panel rather than replacing one. A panel means running a fixed set of buyer questions across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity on a schedule, in fresh sessions, and recording whether you were mentioned, whether you were cited, and which competitor turned up instead. Three cycles of that give you a share of voice per topic and a list of prompts where somebody else is quoted, which is the actual work order. The full method belongs in its own guide rather than here: How to build a panel that survives a non-deterministic system, the five numbers worth reporting, how to read AI referral traffic and server logs, and the measurement mistakes that manufacture progress.

What GEO costs on top of SEO

Since GEO became part of our work, our retainers have risen by roughly 10 percent. That surcharge buys hours on our GEO service rather than a place on a trend list. Here is where those hours go, as line items rather than as a promise. A structured data pass across the pages carrying your key facts. An entity cleanup covering your Google Business Profile, your directory listings and your review platforms, so one company ends up with one set of facts. Declarative rewrites of the openings on those same pages. A monthly prompt panel with a written result. And roughly an hour a month spent watching what the answer surfaces do, because they move faster than the ranking algorithm ever did.

Now the part most quotes leave out. Three of those five items belong in a competent SEO retainer already. Structured data, entity consistency and clear openings were good practice long before AI answers existed. What is genuinely new is the panel and the watching, and that is roughly where the 10 percent lands. A GEO retainer quoted at the size of an SEO retainer is either SEO under a new name or contains work nobody has described to you yet. Ask which of the two it is.

Tools are the other line on the invoice, and the one most likely to be sold to you first. US demand for „ai visibility tools“ went from 10 searches a month in August 2025 to 660 in July 2026 at a cost per click of 9.78 dollars, which tells you how hard that category is being marketed right now. A tracking tool earns its license once you run enough prompts across enough cycles that manual runs cost more than the subscription. Before that point it produces a dashboard you cannot act on. We run the first quarter manually for exactly that reason, then decide with numbers instead of a hunch.

Three pricing patterns are worth refusing outright. A GEO retainer sold alongside an SEO retainer where nobody can name a single deliverable that differs. A setup fee for structured data that the SEO scope already covers. And any price attached to a guaranteed position inside an AI answer, which nobody can deliver, because the systems are non-deterministic and no vendor controls the ranking of a passage. A per prompt guarantee is a red flag rather than a service level.

Compare the alternative. A separate GEO package next to an SEO retainer bills a second time for work that largely overlaps, because both start with the same crawlable site, the same content, and the same entity data. Split them across two agencies and you get the worst version: Two roadmaps, two sets of markup, and a schema conflict nobody owns.

Four claims about GEO that do not hold up

„GEO replaces SEO.“ The opposite is true. A page has to be crawled, indexed, and snippet eligible before any generative engine can quote it, so cutting SEO to fund GEO removes the foundation.

„You need new files and markup for AI.“ Google states in writing that no AI text files and no special schema.org types are needed to appear in its AI features, and since May 2026 it says outright that Google Search ignores llms.txt. Other systems may still read such a file, so keep one as a briefing document if it costs you nothing. It is not an entry ticket.

„GEO is a tool question.“ Tools measure, they do not create citability. A dashboard tells you a competitor is quoted more often. Changing that takes edits to your content, your markup, and your profile data.

„GEO only pays off for big brands.“ Clarity beats budget here more often than in classic search. A mid-market company with clean facts and dated statements can be quoted ahead of a much larger competitor whose data contradicts itself across ten sources.

👉 Curious where your brand already shows up in AI answers, and where a competitor shows up instead? Request a free first analysis

Frequently asked questions about GEO and SEO

Are GEO and SEO the same thing?

No, but they share almost all of their groundwork. SEO optimizes visibility in classic result lists, GEO optimizes whether your facts get quoted in AI answers. At taismo, GEO is part of the SEO retainer rather than a separate product.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. A generative engine can only quote pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet, and Google confirms that no extra requirements exist beyond standard SEO. Without the SEO basics there is nothing for an AI system to cite.

How does generative engine optimization work?

A generative engine splits a question into sub-questions, retrieves pages, ranks single passages, and quotes the passage that answers a sub-question most clearly. GEO means writing those passages so they stand alone, marking the facts up, and keeping the entity behind them consistent everywhere.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

SEO targets ranked links, AEO targets the direct answer such as featured snippets and voice results, and GEO targets citations inside generated answers. The deliverables overlap so heavily that one strategy covers all three.

Does GEO have anything to do with geotargeting?

No. In GEO the letters stand for generative engine optimization. Geo marketing, geotargeting, and geographic SEO use the same three letters for location-based targeting, which is local SEO and a different discipline entirely.

How do you measure GEO?

Since June 2026 the Search Generative AI performance report in Search Console shows how often links to your site appeared inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. It reports impressions only, with no clicks or position, and it has not rolled out to every property. Beyond Google you track a fixed set of buyer questions monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and record how often you are mentioned and cited.

Are GEO and SEO best practices the same?

Largely yes. Google’s May 2026 guide on optimizing for generative AI features states that optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO. The practices that differ are matters of degree: Answering a question outright in the opening sentence, keeping company facts identical across every source, and adding a prompt panel to your reporting.

Do I need structured data for GEO?

No. Google states that structured data is not required for generative AI search and that there is no special schema.org markup to add for it. Markup still earns its place by removing ambiguity about who published a page and which organization stands behind it, and Google’s own condition is that it matches the text a visitor sees.

How do I move from SEO to GEO?

You do not move, you add. The same crawl, the same index and largely the same pages serve both surfaces, so there is nothing to migrate. The practical version is one pass over the pages carrying your most valuable facts: Rewrite the openings so each section answers its question outright, make the company data identical everywhere, then keep the normal content cycle running.

Sources

Google Search Central: „AI features and your website“, developers.google.com, last updated 10 December 2025.

Aggarwal, Pranjal et al.: „GEO: Generative Engine Optimization“, KDD 2024, arXiv, revised 28 June 2024.

Chapekis, Athena;
